This 2 disk set covers two of Britain’s most popular waterways. The Grand Union Leicester Section This section runs from Norton junction near Watford Gap to Leicester, and takes in the Welford Arm and Market Harborough Arm. There’s plenty to interest the canal boater, with three tunnels, two staircase flights of locks, and the Inclined Plane at Foxton. Apart from the two major towns of Leicester and Market Harborough, there are no other built up areas on this delightfully tranquil passage. At Leicester, the canal runs in to the river Soar, and brings a complete contrast for the boater; a delightful meandering non-tidal river navigation. The river gets deeper and wider as it winds its way to the confluence with the River Trent near Nottingham. The Braunston – Birmingham programme covers the journey from one of the hubs of the canal network at Braunston through pleasant open countryside, to Royal Leamington Spa and Warwick, and finally right into the heart of Britain’s second city, Birmingham. The penultimate few miles are little changed from when the commercial carriers abandoned the network in the 1960’s, and then suddenly, one emerges onto the world stage, right into the heart of one of the most ambitious and successful urban regeneration schemes of modern times; Gas Street Basin and the waterway heart of modern Birmingham.
