This 3 disk set covers the three major waterways that meet at or near Sawley; The River Trent, The Grand Union Leicester Section and the Trent & Mersey Canal. Disk 1 The River Trent. Our journey begins at Shardlow. The programme explores Nottingham, and the delightful town of Newark. At Cromwell lock, we set out onto the tideway, which is fast and exciting. We show you what happens when you meet a 600 tonne gravel barge, stop off to explore Gainsborough, and negotiate the difficult entrance into Keadby lock. Disk 2 The Grand Union Leicester Section covers the narrow gauge waterway through Watford locks and Foxton locks from Braunston to Market Harborough, and then the wide beam section to join the River Soar at Leicester, and on down to the junction with the River Trent Disk 3 The Trent & Mersey. Originally known as the Grand Trunk Canal, it formed the backbone of James Brindley’s vision for a waterway transport system linking the industrial centres to the coalfields, and to Britain’s major ports. Today, it’s a pleasant cruising route which follows the valleys of the Rivers Weaver and upper Trent.
